Google Docs #4

Another tip that is actually a Chrome tip but is related to writing which is why I'm posting it as part of the Google Docs series.

Grammarly is a Chrome extension that revises text you type in Chrome. It suggests corrections for you to make to your spelling and your grammar, and it even provides an explanation for you with alternative options to chose from. To learn how to use the extension, watch the video above and follow the steps here.

Google Docs #3

Copious amounts of our communication are written. While we need to communicate in plain English, some words are superior in their ability to convey a message. Todays tip is actually about Google Chrome (the browser), but we think you'll like it when you need to write!

Callow. Firebrand. Harangue. Excoriate. Schadenfreude. Sangfroid. Do you know what these words mean?

With the Magoosh Chrome extension, you learn a new word in every new Chrome tab you open. The interface is super simple, making learning new words very easy–you’ll learn new words without even thinking about it. Check it out by clicking hither.

Intranet login changes

The Intranet has migrated to a new login system with a focus on simplicity and flexibility.

Since Monday, 22 August, you can now find a new G+ icon on Intranet homepage. By clicking on this red icon, you may use your TSA Google account to login to the Intranet.

Please remember the username format is firstname_lastname@salvationarmy.org.nz, and the password is the same as your Citrix password/THQ network password.

The web browser recommended by ISG is the Google Chrome browser, so if you are using IE and having issues logging in, please try Google Chrome first before contacting iSG, and then only if you are still having problems, log a ticket with us to assist you as our standard answer will be to suggest you use Chrome.

If you have not logged into to Google Drive before and the password you are trying does not work, then you can reset your password in the Supportal.  Simply log in and on top right corner click on your name and select "Change Password".  Follow the on screen prompts and be aware that your password MUST BE at least 8 characters in length with at least one numeric digit and a combination of upper and lower case letters.  If you are still having trouble, then feel free to log a ticket with iSG and we will assist you as soon as we are able.

The new Google login system will coexist with the existing login system for a trial period up until the 6 September. After this date, the Intranet will only allow Google login.

Chrome Tips

We think that Chrome is the best browser to use. It is fast and secure as well as easily updated (it does it all by itself). But there are a couple of other tips we want to share today.

The first tip is to login to your browser using your @salvationarmy.org.nz account. This will make your bookmarks and settings will follow you whatever computer you're using (provided you've logged in on that one too). So when you bookmark a site at your desk you'll be able to see it on your mobile phone!

You can also de-clutter the tool bar, mute tabs quickly, and search smarter and faster really easily. Check out this article for more details: bettercloud.com/ChromeTips

Sign Into Chrome

Sign Into Chrome

You probably know that we think that Chrome is the best browser to use. It is fast and offers some security features that help protect us from bad things that sometimes happen on the internet. It is also possible to extend how functional it is through extensions (we've talked about those recently). However there is one feature that we think is the greatest

The single greatest feature in Chrome is your ability to sign in with your @salvationarmy.org.nz account. That may not sound so fantastic to you, but it means that all of configuration and changes you make in Chrome will follow you to any machine you use (provided you sign into Chrome on that machine).

Your @salvationarmy.org.nz login means whatever bookmarks (favorites) you have will follow you between machines (old or new, yours or borrowed)! It also means that we can bookmark some sites you may find useful. See them in the screenshot below:

How do you signin? Easy ... just remember to use your @salvationarmy.org.nz account:

More Extensions

Last week we focussed on a couple of extensions that we've found really helpful. Today we're sharing 2 different links that focus on some really helpful extensions for Chrome. They're all worth looking at, and you may even decide to install some for yourself (I've got several installed).

Be warned, you may want to try some of these so we suggest not looking until you've got 10 minutes to spare and a fresh cup of coffee wink

Dictionary Extension

We've had a bit of focus on apps and extensions this week, and today that continues. Sometimes I'll be reading something in an article and become discombobulated. So I need to copy (<CTRL>+<C>) the word, open another tab,  and either go to dictionary.com or google.com then paste (<CTRL>+<V>) the word. Why isn't there a single button in my browser that does that?

Google Dictionary is an extension that does exactly that and it is brilliant. Check it out here and with a single click get the definition of those words you've never heard!

App: Pocket

Occasionally I stumble on a link that I want to read but don't have the time right now. Or I want to hang on to the link so I can refer to it anytime. Mot often this means I want to access it from my phone when I'm waiting for something, or sitting on the couch in the evening!

There is a great app called Pocket that does exactly this! A Chrome extension (get it here) lets me capture a webpage to look at later. Then an app on your phone (get it here) lets you hang onto pages for viewing later.

Learn more about you can capture everything you want to read and watch in your pocket at their website: getpocket.com Oh and you can use your @salvationarmy.org.nz Google account to sign yourself up so you don't need another username and password!

Google Keep

Google Keep is a note taking application developed by Google.

Google Keep is also available as a mobile app for the Android and iOS mobile operating systems and as a web application.

Easy to use for note taking or for making check lists, it's a useful tool which can be used for making that quick mental note about something you don't want to forget, or for creating your daily To Do list.  You can set reminders for specific times, and you can even "share" your individual notes with someone else so they can see what needs to be done!

If you haven't used it before I would highly recommend this app.

Bookmarks

Bookmarks in Chrome are a great way to quickly get to the sites you use most often. They let you save sites you frequently visit or stumble on and want to save for later reference. I have the bookmark bar (in Chrome) on so I can click on the sites I most often use. To turn this on click through as the screenshot below shows:

b2ap3_thumbnail_ChromeScreenshot.png

One great thing about Chrome is when you're signed in you have all your bookmarks AND they go between your desktop/laptop, phone, tablet (if you have one)! You can also sign into anyone elses Chrome and get your bookmarks.

The other thing that I love about Chrome bookmarks is that when I start typing an address it autocompletes (much like when you're typing somebodies name into Lotus Notes). Autocomplete uses sites you've previously visited AND your bookmarks. Meaning within a couple of letters typed the site I want is visible for me to simply press <ENTER> on.

Happy browsing!

Chrome Tips

Chrome is a browser that is fast. It also can be configured with your @salvationarmy.org.nz account and this means when you logon to any instance of Chrome you get all of your settings and bookmarks! That is a really helpful feature especially seen it is being stored within a Salvation Army environment.

Here are some keyboard shortcuts that you may find useful:

  • Ctrl/Cmd + L – highlights text in the address bar
  • Ctrl/Cmd + T – open a new tab
  • Ctrl/Cmd + W – close current tab
  • Ctrl/Cmd + Shift + T – reopen closed tab
  • Ctrl + Tab – switch tab one tab to the right
